Accessible only at low tide
Lihou Island House is primarily used as youth hostel-style accommodation for youth and school groups, but is also rented out by groups of islanders looking to get away from it all. Hit by a storm in November 2023, the house sustained extensive water damage. Breton began work on site in March 2024 and had less than three months to get the house ready for school groups in June.
This was a project where you couldn’t afford to leave a tool in the van. Accessible only by causeway at low tide, Lihou Island House presented an unusual array of challenges. All equipment and building materials had to be transferred to the island on the back of Lihou Warden Steve Sarre’s tractor. Our team either walked there and back at low tide – sometimes giving small windows of working time – or stayed overnight.
Our team took out and reinstalled windows and doors, replaced insulation, and carried out roof repairs, following the ferocious Storm Ciaran in November 2024.
